Wirtgen was founded in 1961 by Reinhard Wirtgen in Windhagen, Germany, and the company's history is inseparable from the development of road milling as a viable rehabilitation technology. Before cold milling machines existed, deteriorated road surfaces had to be reconstructed using labour-intensive and expensive methods. Wirtgen's engineering team developed the rotating cutting drum that removes precise depths of asphalt pavement in a continuous operation, generating reclaimed material that can be processed and reused - a development that transformed the economics of highway rehabilitation and established an environmental dividend through material recycling.

The W-series cold milling machine range now spans compact urban machines capable of navigating city streets to large-format machines designed for high-production highway removal covering multiple lanes in a single pass.
