The JCB story has a mythological quality that most corporate histories lack. In October 1945, Joseph Cyril Bamford - a twenty-three-year-old with forty pounds in his pocket and a rented lock-up garage in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire - welded together a farm tipping trailer from war surplus steel and sold it at a local market for forty-five pounds, clearing a twelve-pound profit. The product that made JCB a household name - at least in Britain, where JCB became a generic term for any backhoe loader - was the iconic yellow backhoe. JCB did not technically invent the backhoe loader concept, but the company did more than any other manufacturer to refine, popularize, and ultimately define the category. The current 3CX and 4CX models are the direct descendants of machines that dug foundations, laid utilities, and built roads across the UK throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The Fastrac agricultural tractor, capable of speeds exceeding 70 km/h, demonstrated that JCB could apply construction equipment hydraulic expertise to entirely different markets. And JCB's hydrogen combustion engine research - the company built and demonstrated a working hydrogen-powered 20RS excavator - signals a serious commitment to zero-carbon construction equipment.

Canadian operators have found JCB particularly well suited to the urban and suburban construction environments that characterize much of the country's population corridor from Windsor to Quebec City. JCB's compact excavator range, from the 15C-1 to the 100C-1, fits into the confined access sites typical of urban infill development and utility maintenance work.
