Gradall occupies a genuinely unique position in the equipment industry: it is the world's only manufacturer whose primary focus is the wheeled excavator, a machine type that emerged from a specific set of operational demands that conventional crawler excavators cannot efficiently satisfy. The company was founded in New Philadelphia, Ohio, in 1945, and its engineers quickly grasped that highway departments and infrastructure crews needed a machine capable of moving quickly under its own power between job locations while still delivering the reach and digging performance of an excavator.

The resulting XL-series telescoping boom excavator became the workhorse of North American highway maintenance departments. Rather than a conventional articulated boom, Gradall's telescoping design allows the machine's bucket or cutting head to extend along the boom axis, reaching into drainage ditches, under bridge decks, and along embankment slopes with a precision that no conventional machine can replicate. The full-rotation upper structure means a single machine can address both sides of a highway without repositioning, compressing the traffic impact and reducing the need for lane closures.

Canadian provincial transportation departments have standardised Gradall excavators on many routine highway maintenance contracts, particularly for ditch cleaning, culvert clearing, and embankment trimming operations along the Trans-Canada and other major corridors. The machine's ability to travel at road speed between sites makes it far more cost-effective than mobilising a crawler excavator on a lowboy trailer for short-duration maintenance stops scattered over many kilometres.

Railway maintenance contractors have found similar value in Gradall's platform, as the telescoping boom can work precisely alongside track infrastructure without the ground disturbance that a crawler machine would create. In Canada's rail-dense industrial regions - from the Fraser Canyon to the Lakehead - this capability translates directly into safer, more efficient track-adjacent work. Few equipment brands have defined a niche as completely and durably as Gradall has defined the wheeled excavator space.
